About

BRAVO is the Ballet Resource and Volunteer Organization - a group of more than 200 ballet enthusiasts whose support is vital to the on-going operation of San Francisco Ballet. Its members donate over 10,000 volunteer hours every year to SF Ballet.

BRAVO volunteers help by:

  • Assisting at Nutcracker performances and events
  • Assisting at fund-raisers and special events
  • Staffing the Ballet Shop
  • Providing clerical support to Ballet departments
  • Assisting with public relations and outreach activities… and much more!

In addition to supporting the operation of the Ballet, BRAVO provides opportunities to meet some of the staff and dancers and have a lot of fun! If you'd like more information, read the section below on How to Become a BRAVO Volunteer or contact the BRAVO office and tell us you're interested in volunteering.

How to Become a BRAVO Volunteer

You are required to fill out the on-line application that includes supplying two personal or professional references (non-family members), with the understanding that BRAVO will contact your references and also will complete a check of the Megan’s Law List.

After you complete the application, you will be contacted about attending a meeting for prospective members. These sessions are scheduled irregularly throughout the year depending on need, but most are held in the fall and early winter. The session gives you a chance to learn more about BRAVO, gives us a chance to meet you, and helps us both confirm that BRAVO volunteering is right for you.

The purpose of the application process is to evaluate, fairly and respectfully, whether applicants are suited to volunteer for San Francisco Ballet. You will be notified after the meeting whether or not you are accepted into BRAVO.

To summarize, to be accepted for membership, all prospective volunteers must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Complete a BRAVO application form
  • Attend a prospective member session
  • Have acceptable reference checks as well as a background check consisting of searching the Megan’s Law database

Please note:

  • BRAVO volunteers do not usher at Opera House performances. If you are only interested in ushering, please contact the Opera House directly.
  • The busiest time of year for all BRAVO members is the fall and, especially, December when we prepare for and participate in SF Ballet's Nutcracker season. On average, about 45 volunteers are needed for each Nutcracker performance. We do keep busy during the rest of the year, but not on a large scale. Click on ACTIVITIES to find out more about what we do.
