About

BRAVO is the Ballet Resource and Volunteer Organization - a group of more than 300 ballet enthusiasts whose support is vital to the on-going operation of San Francisco Ballet. Its members donate over 10,000 volunteer hours every year to SF Ballet.

BRAVO volunteers help the Ballet by:

  • Assisting at Nutcracker and other ballet performances and events
  • Assisting at fund-raisers, donor recognitions, school programs and various special events
  • Staffing the Ballet Shop
  • Providing cost-saving clerical support to Ballet departments
  • Assisting with public relations and outreach activities

BRAVO members have an opportunity to meet other dance enthusiasts when they work on these volunteer assignments and when they attend bi-monthly General Membership Meetings. Dancers and high-level staff from the Ballet are guest speakers at the General Meetings, giving BRAVO members a unique opportunity to increase their knowledge of the company and the world of ballet.

How to Become a BRAVO Volunteer

Applicants are required to fill out the on-line application that includes supplying two personal or professional references (non-family members), with the understanding that BRAVO may contact your references and also will conduct a check of the Megan’s Law Database.

After you complete the application, you will be contacted about attending an orientation for prospective volunteers. These sessions are usually scheduled for a Saturday morning in September, October and February. The session gives you a chance to learn more about BRAVO, gives us a chance to meet you, and helps us both confirm that BRAVO volunteering is right for you.

The purpose of the application process is to evaluate, fairly and respectfully, whether applicants are suited to volunteer for San Francisco Ballet. You will be notified whether or not you are accepted into BRAVO.

To summarize, to be accepted for membership, all prospective volunteers must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Complete a BRAVO application form
  • Attend a prospective member orientation
  • Have acceptable reference checks as well as a background check consisting of searching the Megan’s Law Database

Please note:

  • BRAVO volunteers do not usher at Opera House performances. If you are only interested in ushering, please contact the Opera House directly.
  • The busiest time of year for all BRAVO members is the fall and early winter, especially December and January.  During December's Nutcracker season, about 45 volunteers are needed for each performance.  The Opening Night Gala quickly follows in January, where up to 60 volunteers are needed for the event.  We do keep busy during the rest of the year, but not on such a large scale. Click on ACTIVITIES to find out more about what we do.
